On April 18th, 2025, The Ontario Fire Marshal’s (OFM) Mobile Live Fire Training Unit (MLFTU) was brought in for the Petrolia & North Enniskillen Fire Department (PNEFD) to participate in an intensive live burn training session at the J.H. Fairbank Fire Training Centre. This training event featured the use of the MLFTU; a propane-fueled state-of-the-art live-fire simulator that is operated by Ontario Fire College instructors. Training alongside the OFM with the MLFTU provides the PNEFD with realistic fire scenarios to enhance their firefighting skills and techniques.

Purpose of the Live Burn Training
The primary objective of the live burn training was to prepare firefighters for real-world fire emergencies. By simulating various fire conditions, participants were able to practice critical skills such as:
Fire suppression techniques
Incident command and teamwork
Safety protocols and risk assessment
This hands-on experience is crucial for developing the confidence and proficiency needed when facing actual fire situations.
The MLFTU can be transported virtually anywhere. During training exercises it is raised into a two-story configuration, and operated without any external power or fuel sources. Inside, it simulates real emergencies with flames, intense heat, heavy smoke, high humidity, and low visibility—exactly the kind of conditions our crews may face on the job.
What makes this training so valuable is its realism, while still maintaining strict safety protocols. The MLFTU is equipped with multiple redundant systems that constantly monitor gas and temperature levels. If limits are exceeded, or if an emergency stop is triggered, the unit automatically shuts down and activates ventilation to keep everyone safe.
By training under these extreme yet controlled conditions, our firefighters strengthen their skills, decision-making, and confidence—so that when real emergencies happen, we’re ready to protect our community.

Structure of the Training Sessions
Throughout the day, the suppression team engaged in numerous live burn scenarios within the trailer. Each scenario was designed to mimic different types of fires that firefighters may encounter in the field.
The controlled environment of the training trailer allowed firefighters to experience the dynamics of fire behavior, smoke conditions, and heat exposure while in a controlled environment.
Debriefing After Each Training Scenario
After each training scenario, the team underwent a debrief discussing the challenges and obstacles that they encountered during the exercise. This reflective practice allowed participants to:
Identify areas for improvement
Share insights and experiences
Enhance teamwork and communication
Reinforce learning outcomes and strategies
These debrief sessions were essential for fostering a culture of continuous improvement and ensuring that lessons learned could be applied in future training and real-life situations.
Support Operations Response Team (S.O.R.T) Involvement
In addition to the suppression team, the Support Operations Response Team (S.O.R.T) was present on-site to undergo firefighter rehabilitation training. S.O.R.T. members play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of our firefighters during an active fire, and having them present at this live burn training exercise was vital for our firefighters. Their responsibilities included:
Monitoring firefighter vital signs immediately after they exist the fire scene
Ensuring proper hydration and rest for our firefighting team
Assessing the physical condition of firefighters
Providing medical support as needed
The presence of S.O.R.T. emphasized the importance of health and safety in high-stress situations, highlighting the department's commitment to the welfare of its personnel.

By utilizing the MLFTU live burn training trailer, firefighters honed their skills in a realistic and controlled environment, preparing them for the challenges they may face in the line of duty. The collaboration with the Support Operations Response Team further underscored the department's dedication to safety and effective emergency response. This training session not only enhanced individual capabilities but also strengthened team cohesion, ensuring that the department remains ready to protect and serve the communities of Petrolia and North Enniskillen.
